WHAT’S NEXT?
A Case Study on the Former Cotton Factory [RO Industria Bumbacului]: an Urban Regeneration Process. Guided by a vision, Twisted by the Context

We currently observe that in Bucharest many initiatives which had been seen emerging (after 2008) as innovative and which created high hopes for alternative area transformation are shrunk in energy, aims, and visibility. Why is this happening? What are the causes of this shrinking? Is Cotton Industry area transformation in danger of the same destiny? What can we learn from this and from other similar initiatives in Europe?

After 2 years of developing various projects in the former Bucharest Cotton Factory, it is time to draw a line and see where we currently stand. Even though our growth has been better than initially estimated, without other types of partners, our effort in this process will be capped. Will we reach the limit of human and material resources?
………………………………………………………………………………
The debate will bring more light on how bottom-up initiatives, all over Europe, can secure a proper balance between: community organisation, cooperation with relevant urban actors and financial resources.

We take advantage of the planned visit of our international partners -
re:Kreators - in order to make this debate public. re:Kreators is a network of cooperative area developers in Europe. They provide an alternative approach to developing in a time where working with large budgets and master plans are stagnating. This is an approach that revolves around doing business, building, sharing ideas, and doing work with others, together. It’s a change in the scale and working structure of development projects.
